Fitness–For-Duty Evaluation

A fitness-for-duty evaluation measures an employee’s ability to perform specific job functions without posing a “direct threat” to the health and safety of the person or others after an illness or injury (Americans with Disabilities Act [ADA], 1992). According to ADA, a fitness-for-duty evaluation must be job related and consistent with business necessity. It is advised that an employer’s company policy is consistent for all employees when a fitness-for-duty-evaluation is required.

Our medical providers will compare the job requirement with the individual’s abilities and if needed recommend specific limitations based on individualized assessment of history and examination. If the medical provider has questions on the individual’s functional abilities then functional testing may be required.

Reasons for a fitness-for-duty evaluation

A fitness-for-duty evaluation is necessary when:

  • an employee is ready to return to work after an injury or illness
  • an employee asks for an accommodation of a disability
  • an employee has a documented job performance problem
  • an employee wants to transfer to another job

Fitness-for-Duty Exam Requirements:

  • Previous Medical Records must be available 3 days prior to time of exam.
  • Current Job Description must be available 3 days prior to time of exam.

After each evaluation, your company’s designated contact will receive a report noting your employee’s capabilities or limitations. As the employer, it is your responsibility to determine suitable accommodations, if required, based on recommendations received.
